Range Officer Training

WAC Range Officers are the backbone of safe range operations — volunteer members who protect every shooter on the line.

Volunteer Training Program

Range Officer Training

Being a WAC Range Officer (RO) is one of the most important volunteer positions at the club. WAC ROs maintain and ensure a safe shooting environment on all public ranges and across every discipline offered at the facility. ROs are easily identified by the orange or red hats worn proudly on the line.

What Range Officers Do

WAC Range Officers are volunteer members who serve as the club’s primary safety presence on the range. Their responsibilities include:

  • Maintaining a safe shooting environment on all public ranges
  • Overseeing safety across all club disciplines and events
  • Issuing and enforcing range commands during live fire
  • Responding promptly to unsafe situations or ceasefire calls
  • Assisting new shooters with range procedures and etiquette
  • Supporting match directors during club competitions

Trained ROs are easily recognized by their orange or red hats — worn at all times while on duty on the range.

How to Get Certified

Step 1 — Be a current WAC member. RO training is available exclusively to active WAC members in good standing.

Step 2 — Show up on the 1st Saturday. No pre-registration required. Classes are held monthly in the South Classroom (behind the main clubhouse) starting at 8:00 AM.

Step 3 — Complete the training. The course covers range commands, safety protocols, ceasefire procedures, firearms handling oversight, and WAC-specific range rules.

Step 4 — Receive your certification. Certified ROs are added to the club’s volunteer roster and receive their official orange or red RO hat.

Why Become a Range Officer?

Volunteering as an RO is one of the most meaningful ways to give back to the WAC community. ROs help keep every member, guest, and visitor safe — and they play a direct role in making the club’s events and matches run smoothly.

  • Strengthen your own range safety knowledge and skills
  • Be a visible, trusted part of the WAC community
  • Support matches, training classes, and discipline events
  • Help new members feel welcomed and confident at the range
